[00:12.56]Mr.Chief Justice, my dear friends,my fellow Americans:
[00:20.87]The oath that I have taken is the same oath
[00:24.37]that was taken by George Washington
[00:26.88]and by every president under the Constitution.
[00:30.49]But I assume the president
[00:33.01]under extraordinary circumstances,
[00:35.75]never before experienced by Americans.
[00:39.79]This is an hour of history
[00:41.74]that troubles our minds
[00:43.27]and hurts our hearts.
[00:45.02]Therefore I feel it is my first duty
[00:48.53]to make an unprecedented contact with my countrymen.
[00:53.11]Not in an inaugural address,
[00:56.07]not a fire side chat,
[00:58.58]not a campaign speech.
[01:00.34]Just a little straight talk among friends.
[01:03.95]And I intend it to be the first of many.
[01:07.01]I am acutely aware that you have not elected me
[01:11.25]as your president by your ballots.
[01:13.66]So I ask you to confirm me
[01:16.17]as your president with your prayers.
[01:19.45]And I hope that such prayers
[01:21.20]will also be the first of many.
[01:23.93]If you have not chosen me by secret ballot,
[01:27.65]neither have I gained office
[01:29.73]by any secret promises.
[01:32.35]I have not campaigned either
[01:34.33]for presidency or the vice-presidency.
[01:37.82]I have not subscribed　to any partisan platform.
[01:41.65]I am indebted　to no man and only
[01:45.26]to one woman—my dear wife—
[01:47.89]as I begin this very difficult job.
[01:51.16]I have not sought this enormous responsibility,
[01:54.67]but I will not shirk it.
[01:56.64]Those who nominated,
[01:58.50]then confirmed me as vice-president,
[02:00.91]were my friends and are my friends.
[02:04.08]They were of both parties,
[02:06.37]elected by all the people
[02:08.24]and acting under the Constitution in their name.
[02:12.17]It is only fitting then
[02:13.96]that I should pledge to them and to you
[02:16.55]that I will be the president of all the people.
[02:20.28]With all the strength and all the good sense
[02:24.10]I have gained from life,
[02:25.85]with all the confidence that my family,
[02:28.15]my friends and my dedicated staff impart to me,
[02:32.20]and with the good-will of countless Americans
[02:36.13]I have encountered in recent visits to forty states,
[02:39.74]I now solemnly reaffirm my promise
[02:43.34]I made to you last December 6th:
[02:46.40]to uphold the Constitution,
[02:49.35]to do what is right as God gives me to see the right,
[02:54.06]and to do the very best I can for America.

[03:02.04]I will not let you down.
